my cam adjusting experance

Post by rusty4g »

i took my car to the dyno the other day. barring in mind all i have done is bolted a set of dual carbs from a d14 to a d16z6 with a set of trumpets, a 4-2-1 manifold and a 2.25" full exhaust system. it had a dwell after 1/4 throttle and could not work out why. it made 118 bhp. if i am honest i was expecting more so i started scratching my head on things that will improve it. the first thing i looked at was my cam timing and found that my valves were not opening and closing at the rite time. the exhaust valves were staying open after the piston had started making its way back down the stroke and the inlets were not opening early enough. i spent about half an hour studying the valve opening and closing timing and found that my cam was 6 degrees retard from its best setting. so i adjusted the cam so the inlets started to open as soon as the piston reached top dead (10 degrees before top dead on the crank) and the exhausts were closed as soon as the piston started to make its way back down the stroke (10 degrees after top dead on the crank). there is 20 degrees of crank movement where the piston is at top dead/not moving. when i drove the car after making these changes the engine ran much smother and feels more powerful. the dwell i had has disappeared and now pulls harder in vtec :D this could have been caused by head skimming as i don't know the history of the engine. so i am hoping for some better results at the dyno next time.

118bhp is a fairly good figure considering you hadn't set it up iirc gizmo's EF2 made a similar figure on its first dyno run

My 1616 made 145.9 Bhp ;)
D16a9 Powered dream machine!

No greater fun then backing off the throttle at 7400rpm and spraying fire out the exhaust ;)
