Next car - Should i?

Post by ColinR »

Ok so Ive been driving my 200sx for a month now, and I really want a gen4 as a wee project.

Regardless of what I get it will be getting totally stripped and rebuilt with new parts.

Preference is to start with a bare shell.

But...

Should I use a GL or a VT shell?

Don't want to spend to much money, but chassis, shell, etc wise what are the differences?

Edit - I'm thinking I could prob pick up a better condition GL for much cheapness, to strip, than a VT. I don't need any of the interior, etc either.

P.S. This is gonna be a gen4 like you have never seen before. Drawn up a spec list and it is impressive on paper

hmm... not really thought about one of these.

In that case whats the difference between a all the gen4 shells/chassis? are the 16v/VT chassis reinforced, etc?

Pretty much don't want to spend more than £500 for the shell, but that could include buying a nicer one and selling the engine, interior, wings, bonnet, bumpers trip, rear hatch, spoiler, etc.

Don't need any of it ;)

It's under the bonnet that will be different. Engine mounts and ancillaries would be in different positions depends on the engine that you want to use???? Gotta go VTEC though

Now are the mount points different, or just the actual engine mounts?

Thinking it might be easier to use a VT for my plans.

Shouldn't have a problem selling the bits i don't need I wouldn't need thought!

Mount points between the gl/16v/vt will be slighlty different but its not just that the fuel tank is slightly different between the GL and the 16v/vt gl has drums not discs on then rear early gl's and 16v had different rear lower suspension arms.

Personaly I would go for the 16v shell as it will be cheaper to get than a vt but a better start point than gl a vtec conversion to a 16v shell is about 6 hrs where as a gl shell will take you about 2 days minimum as you have different wire looms the fuel pump is mechanical and on the engine as apposed to electrical and at the tank the 16v to vtec conversion is very plug and play trust me I have done about 7 of these now in civics and crx's and can be done in 6 hrs.

Either way good luck dude.

If you are going to strip it out, start with the lightest shell you can.
Just get a tank from a 16V or VT for replacing the GL's and grab the loom from it at the same time.
Fuel pump & sender is only 5 wires tops and if there is no interior anyway....
As for engine wiring, again, stripped out it wont be hard and you can mix and match the loom without having to strip out the GL's. Leave that in for lights and non engine stuff and use a VT or whatever loom from the engine you want to run to the engine.

Say if you are going for something like a B18 or B20 NA setup then I'd get a lighter sheel for sure.
Tho I suspect you'll still be after a turbo huh?

Theres no cut-out for the in-tank pump on the gl shell. The money you would spend on conversion mounts would be more than the difference between 1.6 and vt shells. assuming you are thinking of vtec. Go with the shell that best suits the engine, as all the styling bits (wings bonnet etc) are interchangeable.

How much for the shell?
