How To - Install Bucket Seats/ Make Custom Runners

Post by Gizmo »

First of all, would like to say, that we did a bodge job, not the Ideal way to modify the rails, but, could find subframes for these seats, so, the only way for me!

Anyways! first of, i removed the OEM seat, then removed the rails, i measured the distances between the holes were the rails bolt to on the underside of the seats, and drotted down the measurments

I then got some Nice thick steel, and cut 2 lenths to fit the Bucket Seats, these lenths are what the rails will bolt to, the lenths were 16" long, the rails were 13" apart, afterwich, i gave the lenths a quick coat of gloss black to protect them

(at this point, forgot to take meaningful pictures, DOH!)

the left side rail, directly bolted to the seat after a bit of drilling to elongate one of the holes at the front so it directly bolted to the left side of the bucket seat.

The right side rail sits roughly, 1.2"s below the left side, so, we dug out some inch box section, and cut it to lenth, and positioned it 13"s on the steel lenths from the left side rail, then sandwiched it, as we bolted the rail to steel lenths (Anyone confused yet? at this point, i remembered to take images!)

There we have it! the perfect bodge job till i can find some proper subframes! i test fitted it to my GL in the garage (Pictured) and with a tiny bit of force to warp the whole thing, it fitted, then it bolted strait into the DX no hassles! Perfect!

I like your thinking!!!
I did the same with my bargain second hand Cobra Clubmans, except i welded a square outa 2 inch wide 4 and 5 millimetre steel, then butchered the original seat subframes and welded the bottom rails to this square.

Just drilled and bolted her up then, easy!!!

One thing i would watch with the welding method though is the metal warping from the heat, ruining the precise measuring i did on one seat!!!

A long metal bar was used with a bit of thickness and she fitted a treat!!!

Top write up!! 8)

DIY ROCKS!!!!

Giz you're an angel, i read this before i picked up my new bucket seats and it made no sense to me...but now i've taken the rails off the old DX seats and put them against the seats it's all become clear :D .... I will be sorting this out tomorrow and over the weekend :D

Going to be making a start of this tonight.

Was going to wait for the Mrs to be at work at a weekend but that wont be for a few weeks and I want them in now.

So hopefully a few evenings and I'll have two nice front CRX seats. :top:

Just have to do something about the rears then.
