How To - DIY engine mount poly filling

Post by Icarus »

ok another a tempt at a DIY for me.... please excuse my out of focus pics :?

1: get your engine mounts out of the car.
2: wash them...

I am useing Vortex engine cleaner, this stuff makes your skin peel after a few days if you get it on your hands...

3: before setp 1 buy a DIY windscreen install kit form Commercial Auto Glass R70.

4: Once you have cleaned the mount, clean it again with meths and a clean rag and pull it through the mount.

Here you can see a crack in my mount.

5: Fill it up with the rubber glue form the windscreen install pack.
Image

6: Smooth it out with a putty knife.
Image

7: Add some of the harder over the wet rubber glue.
Image

8: Allow to dry for 24 hours (48 hours to be safe).

Advantages: good for racing if you cant get polyurethane engine mounts.
This should be ok for everyday use but might make the car shake abit on idle.

I have not tested it yet so do it at own risk.

Good tip! I pondered about doing it, but decided I was too lazy. I shall have to try this next time though. I presume they make the mounts pretty stiff. What's the longevity of these modded mounts on average?

Honda, price unknown, call a local dealer?

I've just done a similar thing, although my mounts weren't actually damaged, I filled them up with a polyurethane sealant from the local motor factors.

My EJ9 used to be fitted with similar mounts...
The EJ9 was pretty rigid already with braces and bushes but I do not think this mod is for everyone.

If your car is a stripped track weapon it is a cool mod and you will feel it in cornering/agressive driving.

If your car is a daily with interior, it is a bit like driving a diesel sometimes. It makes the car shake quite a lot while you are waiting at traffic signals. It could become a bit tiring in traffic.

At the same time it works (you save money) but it never gonna be like a set of expensive genuine OE Honda mounts.

I confirm no problems with MOT but engine vibrations force you to unbolt your engine mounts regulary...at least check.
