boring daily

Post by lukethelaw »

In a effort to keep my ED7 as a track car i need something to drive daily thats guna be very cheap to run, the ep is an average car performance wise but running both is a little to costly for me.

So as outside of honda i don't know much about other cars on offer i need some suggestions!

5K max budget
2000+
As economical as possible (now do more miles to and from work)
Not bothered being a diesel either

Im assuming by meeting the above the car will be cheap to tax and insure anyway

Cheers

As always I can highly recomend a MGZS TD. 115bhp
53mpg, £130 road tax, grp 11 ins.
half feax leather, A/C, PAS.
My car is about 135bhp with almost 200lbft torque.
It's a Honda chassis too.
The only downside is these last of the lines (mk2 ZS) have no underseal.
These go for around 2K, all service parts have normal prices, e.g. clutch £80

I would look at diesel Audis and VWs first, possibly a few Ford diesels too.

Or for an economical petrol, I would actually consider a small engine Fiat Panda
Where I used to work had them as courtesy cars and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Although they are painfully slow, they were averaging well into 50mpg and I think they are about £35 for 12 months tax.

But, it all depends what you really need and want. There is a whole host of cars to choose from with your budget, but you need to whittle them down to what you require.

Estate/saloon/hatchback, manual/auto, engine size etc.

In an effort to keep my vt as track/project car I bought a micra off ebay. 55mpg, comfortable, good stereo and ridiculously cheap to run and insure and its fairly practical. Handles like a bag of S*!t though

I would honestly do as above, save £4K for something you actually want to spend it on and buy something for £1K. I ran around in a 1.4 Almera for about 4 years, was spot on, reliable, good in winter, good on fuel and when you folded the rear seats, you could get $hit loads in there!

1.5i LS EK hatchback's are great. Can be had for under £750 with T&T, and will do 350-500m to a tank.

Is an e46 320D/330D in your price range? Nicest diesel I've been in.

If not then a mk4 golf tdi 130, can remap to about 160-170 and still maintain over 50mpg. Loads of change too.

citreon C5 2.2 HDI Possibly the comfiest car around and you can raise and lower the ride height from inside the car for giggles.

Skoda octavia 1.9tdi is an incredible buy aswell or a seat toledo 1.9tdi (You can pick them up for dirt cheap)
D16a9 Powered dream machine!

No greater fun then backing off the throttle at 7400rpm and spraying fire out the exhaust ;)

Id avoid anything rwd as its going to be winter soon, if it snows alot this year you wont be getting anywhere in a BMW or Merc. last year my boss had to buy another car as he couldn't get anywhere in hiss merc

Id do as Rich said just buy a cheap little Micra or something, there no point spending loads on a car unless its something you really want.

A gl?
Economy won't match a diesel, but you'd save on running costs over a modern diesel for sure.

Wow! First time I've ever been quoted for doing something sensible

But yeah; with winter coming up I don't care if the micra takes a supermarket ding and it'll be a great winter hack. I'd also recommend the cheapness to run thing as it'll allow me (once winter has passed) to spend more on the civic (parts and track days) and get it to a condition I aspire to. Got the micra off ebay for £360 (74k, fsh) 8)

Unless you've got money to burn that is.... then you can get what you want :P
