After long talks with several VERY experienced motorsport engineers, it seems that the load on the wheel bearings and studs when spacing the dics is negligible in comparison to the risk of carrier failure in milling the face. Think ill make up a 3.5mm spacer for the disc, just don't like the idea of taking 3-3.5mm of a 14mm carrier, just over 20% material being taken away....

Seems you've been talking to people who are full of S*!t.

Been standing on these for over year now and nothing wrong, and not the only one.
Just think of where the forces are acting.

Aha don't think it's fair to say that without meeting them, but they also said that if it's tried and tested then fair enough!
Still think ill make some spacers

Do these clear 14" wheels?

Depends on the wheels.
Mine clear the yellow Honda spacer! and a 14" wheel I have lying around that probably came from a Honda (as the center bore was ground out to fit my Astra).

I have stock Shuttle wheels, which are getting widened.
I learned that they were probably stock on a Civic D16A9, but don't know for UK cars...

Picked a full bigger setup the other day! Was hoping I could get away with using civic calipers, doh! Prelude calipers here I come! :D

BTw can anyone confirm the 5th gen calipers fitting? Got loads of 5th gens near me breaking lol!

So in this case, we are putting 282mm caliper on a 262mm disc?
