Diary of a GL

Post by civic_chaz »

Hello to all

Thought it was about time i started a diary for my baby, not much work has been done to it so far due to money and time but im hoping over the next few months my funding will be a bit better so its time to start giving her the tlc she needs.

Modifications to the car so far;

4-2-1 manifold
1.6 centre section with a random back box welded on
D15 cam
Ground down carb needles
Raceland coilovers which have been lowered by 100-120mm (thats just going by what firemansam had told me)
Graffiti style 16v bonnet

I bought the car off firemansam a few months backit has 72k miles on the clock. The car wasnt in the best condition. The N/S/F wing is damaged so it needs replacing and the front end was a bit wonky.

This is how the front end sat when i bought her,
Image

I got the opportunity to spend the day at my brothers garage so we stripped the front end down, strapped the slam panel to the back of a van and my brother just reversed slightly and pulled the front end out a bit, here she is strapped to the back of a van,
Image

And heres the end result, still some more attention needed in that area but im waiting until i have a new wing so i can align it all properly. Also the bonnet doesnt sit right but unsure where thats going wrong at the moment.

We also got the car up on the ramp to inspect the underside, i must admit i was expecting to find a few rusty bits and whatnot but i was quite impressed with the condition, the exhaust was blowing where the mani meets the centre section so we cleaned it all up and replaced the gasket but there is a hole in the silence on the centre section from what i assume is speed bump or something like that. I'm not too worried about this as i will be replacing the centre section and backbox, i want a backbox which will come out on the passenger side as the current one is on the drivers side and its bugs the hell out of me as i dont think it looks right.

If anyone can point me in the direction of a single exit exhaust that comes out of the left that would be great, cant afford a brand new one unfortunately.

I am in need of a pair of rear wheel bearings as one is completely fooked so the other one is probably not far off either so that will be the next bit of work i'll be doing.

Plans for the future;

I have these badboys which are itching to go on the car!
Image

Theyre off a yamaha R6 and i managed to get these and a spare set for £40, quite a bargain i thought.

I am tempted to put a D15 head on but am unsure of the benefits so will look more into this when the time comes.

The panel filter that is in at the moment is black so i need to replace that,i want the drop in k & n filter as i have heard that will be the best for performance.

I need to get a set of wheels as she is still on steelies at the moment,i have a friend who works at a wheel refurb specialist and he has said if i get a set he will refurb and paint for a few beers so am pretty lucky there.

Body wise i want to get both front and rear VT bumpers but i want to find a nice rear lip as i find the 4g always looks a bit too high at the back.
As soon as i have the bumpers sorted i want to spray the car Gun metal grey and also colour code everything.
I will be getting rid of the rear window wiper and the aerial and also debadging, i am tempted to leave the GL sticker though.

Overall The car is pretty nippy, i think theres plenty more to be had from her as the air filter is completely caked in shite.
I would hope she is sitting around 100bhp but knowing my luck it isnt!!!

I probably wont be getting much work done in the next few weeks apart from sanding down the bonnet and getting all the front end prepared in primer ready for spraying.

Me and my brother will be attempting the spray ourselves. The majority of the work carried out on the car will be my brother and im just hoping to learn as we go along as i am no mechanic. Luckily for me,my brother is the most anal person i know, especially when it comes to cars so i have full trust in whatever he does.
Im trying to convert him over to hondas but he is an avid nissan boff. He has a Nissan 300zx SWB Slicktop NA which is a lovely car, he loves my GL so a little bit of work and he'll be driving one himself before long!!

Thanks to anyone who has bothered to read this and please dont hesitate to point out where ive gone wrong. My main aim from messing about with the gl, aside from having a lovely civic, is to learn as much as i can mechanically.
also if anybody thinks they have parts which i might want then pm me as i might be tempted.

Peace
Chaz

Yeah i must admit im hoping to have a pretty quick gl by the end of it,but i cant see it happening too soon.

I'm a bit scared by what the fuel consumption will be if im honest but i still think it'll be worth it but im def gonna stick with 1400cc power lol

Once the bodywork is neatened up she will be in nice condition, theres only the passenger side sill/wheel arch that knackered, other than that its just bumps and scratches.

Will also look a lot neater once that bonnets gone!

Thanks

Nice motor! I got some 16-16 alloys if you want em, just for the cost of delivery, or they're going down the scrappy (need a big referb) D:

I'll get you a pic up tomorow, they would need alot of sanding down, they're corroded on top but are still solid and can be driven on, cheers
