Re: I bought my old EE9 back! Update, paint resto 2/11/14
A sealer is a stage on its own, doesn't need to have a wax over it, but never put a wax under it because it stops the wax breathing.
They last longer than waxes but have a more unnatural shiny finish, tend not too look as nice with some colours. I use a sealer instead of a wax on my civic, last about 2 months normally.

Re: I bought my old EE9 back! Update, front end work.
I'll update the thread but the forum seems pretty dead lately.
So I bought an old steering wheel from an air cooled vw (beetle) autojumble, but it was silver so I painted it satin black.
I purhased a boss kit supposedly for an EF but it wouldnt locate the indicator cancelling tabs when the 'top' marking was indeed at the top. If the indicator tabs were located the wheel was off from straight by a huge amount.
I tried it 180 degrees round and still wouldnt sit right. So, as its a budget build, I marked the boss and re-cut the grooves for the indicator cancelling.
It worked but its cheap and nasty and the shroud doesn't even reach the bottom of the boss to hide the horn wires.
I'll look for a proper MOMO one but until then this will do.
Put a spare momo horn button on, this I had in a box of bits I'd forgotten about. I think this was from the mid 90's so period correct.
Wheel flatted, the plastic bag was they most useful thing I've got from Halfords for a while...
Primed
Painted
And fitted to the car.
Then today I decided to get the car out in the sun to dry up any dampness from the garage. I fitted my import size plate I had hanging up since I owned the car last time.
This got me noticing that the front looked on the wonk. The previous owner had to clean/lube the bonnet catch so had had the bumper off at some point. The passenger side headlight was a pond inside and had always leaked, but before, I never used it in the rain. As it had been living outside for 3 years it had gotten too bad. This job i enjoyed as it had bugged me since the day I brought it back home.
I decided to swap the headlight, clean up under the bumper, loosen the filler bar and re-alighn everything.
Headlight courtesy of COSWORTH on here.
Import plate and things don't look 100% straight.
I also got to use my inspection pit for the first time since moving in. So nice not having to lie on wet ground and leaves any more.
Bumper off and its collected quite a pile of leaves since I was last in here.
Some detail spray later its good again. I stonechipped it all when I owned it before, and its held up well.
Comparison between the old and new headlights
Headight in and aligned. Seems its been out before as using the marks left by the old bolt positions it was way off. Part of the reason I think the front looked out of line.
Some fiddling and measuring the gaps around the light with the bonnet closed are the same as the drivers light and just under 1mm out at the point the light starts to curve downwards. You'd never notice.
Filler bar loosened, re-aligned with a magnetic spirit level.
Bumper re-fitted, this was tricky to set up as its gone a bit wobbly on top edge with age. Its better than before I started though.
All done, much better.
Both headlights putting out decent light now.
The eagle eyed of you may notice the indicators are clear again.....
This was an expensive learning curve. Years ago I painted them amber with glass paint. The last owner had the car hit while parked so had to source another. This one was pricey and had a small hole in it. The hole was covered up with amber tape and the whole unit re-painted. I stripped this with acetone and white spirit and was a bit miffed when I discovered the hole.
I started to strip the drivers side and for some reason the plastic lense reacted badly going really cloudy. It won't polish or wet and dry out. Its buggered. I painted it amber again out of desperation. I've asked about and looked on the net and I am still none the wiser why it happened.
Then I found a pair of indicators in Thailand. I wont say the cost, but in hindsight I would never had spent £5 on glass paint 5 years ago.
No pictures as when it happened I wasnt in the mood to capture it.
I have some goodies from Ben_theEFkings stash (thanks again mate) to add on soon, but my wifes paying for them for my birthday and christmas presents (birthdays close to xmas) but won't let me have them until the actual days!

After you've had the oven on and turned it off, stick the headlight in for about ten mins till the glass starts to move a little.
You can separate the glass form the front of it and then give the inside a good clean. Then reseal and have a spare.
Since you've replaced it, got nothing to lose
Car looks great. If it's a keeper and you've got a damp garage, consider some blown ventilation or dare I say a carcoon. it's a small investment to keep it in top notch over winter.
My garage on a warm winter day followed by no cloud will almost rain inside thanks to condensation.

Thats what mine was like in the week. Car wad soaked. I opened the 2 little windows it has and it helped. Going to fit some vents in the door too.
Carcoon is tempting.....

Re: I bought my old EE9 back! Update, front end work 30th no
Another quick update, although it may be the last. The forum seems dead after some long timers left and the 1.4GL-UK, I mean the 4GUK facebook page became so successful.
I may upload this content and continue the thread on Retro-rides forum, and if I do I'll post a link in case anyones interested.
Todays small update the wife bought me a Cusco front strut brace for xmas, well I bought it from Ben_EFKing (cheers mate) and the wife paid for it and took it straight off me back in early december.
When I owned the car before, I had a Cusco front brace but someone had polished the anodising off the main bar. So this time I wanted a standard unmolested one. This is pretty much brand new.
The instructions were very comprehensive (apparently..... )
The Japanese are quite keen on keeping the good stuff to themselves it seems.
Fitted and looking good! The valve cover will be refurbed wrinkle black when the weather improves.
I had a Cusco rear brace originally, and it was from an import track car that was broke for parts. It has some wear and tear but I like the look, and afterall its in the boot so I don't worry if it gets scratched more!
I was very happy when I bought it back and the last owner produced this and said he took it off the day he bought it as he didnt like it but kept it. Result.
The remnants of an old sticker, it has japanese writing on it so thats cool as far as im concerned.
Installed. The boot plastics were cut from when it was installed originally. So was an easy and quick job.
Next job is to fit the manual folding mirrors I have (again, thanks to Ben...) Mine have a temporary glass stuck over the broken original on the drivers side, Its been like that since my brother bought the car way back in 2002.
So new mirrors will get rid of that and allow me to fold them in when its in the garage. Saves my goolies everytime I have to squeeze past the car.
The rack end bush also needs doing, I have the bush and the lock washer is on order with honda. Looks like I'm trying this myself as 2 mechanic contacts have refused to do it.
It handles terribly at speed, knocks over bumps and wanders at anything over 50mph. Classic rack end bush symptoms.
I also need Meister R's, now I may be trying to refurb some other wheels, and if I like them the Mugen MR5's may be up for sale to finance the Meisters. Although the urge to just keep the mugens regardless is stong.
I'd rather not use credit so I'll see what the new wheels look like and make a decision.
Thanks for looking

Sad news stu, although I know exactly what you mean. I've always been a pretty quiet member of the forum but always enjoyed reading what others were getting up to, but lately there is practically nothing going on. It's a real shame and I do hope it's not the end as over many years this has been a very helpful and friendly place.

I'm with you there dill. Theres nothing going on and the facebook page hasnt the same community feeling as on here. Its very young, lots of experts and I bought a part off there and it was wrong. Seller just took the p1ss when i went back with questions.
Crx-uk is the only good forum for this generation of car, but no place for a build thread on a civic. Many years ago it was made quite clear to me it wasnt appreciated.
Retro-rides is a good, helpful, interesting forum with a few honda builds. It seems the most logical progression.

Can't go wrong with Cusco parts.
You are correct,it has become very quiet on here.

Re: I bought my old EE9 back! Update, Cusco braces 29/12
Nice braces stu glad see you're swiftly backing back into the game !
I agree with all of you, sadly the forum has suffered due to the on-set of social media. Its progression in a way the club is more widely known. But the community feel has disappeared.
Also WAY too may experts and wildly priced cars, the prices they want for GL's is ludicrous !
I'm going to start up a couple threads for my current cars. I got out of doing it due to not having the time with work recently. But i'm not working 7 days a week now, 4 years of pain over ! So ill get back on it.
I feel we cant let the forum vanish completely too much effort has been put into it over the years. Even if its just the dedicated few of us that remain i guess the Facebook page works as a sieve for the muppets, only the true enthusiasts get through to the forum

Totally agree. If we give up it dies for good.
I will continue my updates. I check here daily and hopefully the depressing sight of no new content a majority of the time will be a passing phase.
The 4g's that have been sold on from here have owners that hopefully will recognise the forum as a helpful resource and hopefully start posting.
There must be plenty of other enthusiastic (mature) owners out there that have never heard of the forum.
How can we raise its profile.

Re: I bought my old EE9 back! Update, Cusco braces 29/12
Well i have made a start on posting up my project threads just been sorting out the pics so there will be a bit more content for people to read. Whether it'll be interesting however i'm not so sure
Well we can post on the 4g FB page about joining the forum but for the most part that seems to have turned into a forum itself. People mainly buying and selling for extortionate prices.....Of course that does have its benefits its clearout time !
I would agree on the mature part but im only 21 got my first 4g at 14 and well and truly caught the bug ive owned 9 or 10 now i cant even remember myself
I think we just need more content we lost a lot of dedicated members over recent years, Si, Dida, Marc, Tahir, widowmaker etcetc all who where prominent posters. Or in some cases not lost but who have moved on.
Also people like me, who just haven't had the time to post like i used too. My old thread for my Dx was 90 pages or so.

I have just logged back onto this forum for the first time in ages as I am planning on taxing my EF again at the end of this month. I have just noticed this post Stu and really chuffed you have managed to buy your EF back. If the car is in Scotland over the summer it would be great to get them both out again! Like the old days at crail. Once the car is on the road I will make an effort to post more pics on the site.
Re: I bought my old EE9 back! Update, Engine bay clean up 3/
A quick update, I cleaned the engine bay paint with a toothbrush, a rag and wd40, it still needs a bit of finishing, but I highlighted a load of rusty bolts.
So, I went to a variety of scrapyards and realised the 10mm bolts that hold the door check straps on most Hondas are the right ones, and as they are hidden away most are in their original plated finish.
So after some freezer bags of bolts, some puzzled looks from scrap yard owners, no payment required for any of it. (I think they thought I was weird and wanted me gone...) I set about changing as many 10mm bolts from the slam panel, wings, and anything bolted to the firewall.
Here's some pics as an example. Engine bay pictures will come when the rocker covers refurbed wrinkle black.
While I was at it, I repainted the radiator brackets and the battery tie down bar. The battery tie down was coated in a plastic coating which had flaked off on one side but not the other, and it was impossible to sand it off. So I burnt it off with a blowtorch.
All was wirebrushed, primed and painted.
I also found 2 battery tie down rods that weren't corroded at the scrappy, and some nuts from stock that matched the Honda bolts.
Old vs new(er)
Then I had a spot of luck, when I opened an old box file of my Honda Tuning mags there was my old Spoon Sports Gear knob! I'd forgotten about that, but what a nice discovery. I love the feel of the Spoon Sports Duracon knob. Probably because it reminds me of my first car. A 1983 1.0 Austin Mini Metro...
Finally, I am very happy with this. When I bought the car back the heater fan was only working on speeds 3 and 4. I bought a MG Rover Honda Heater fan rheostat / relay thing on ebay with the idea of re soldering the wires.
However, the connector is identical, and the terminals are the same. So I used my old one as a template in card, marked the larger new one, used a hacksaw to cut it to size. Being careful not to damage the wires. Drilled 2 new holes and in it went, and worked a dream.
You can see the larger Rover one on left in the picture below.
Cut down
Fitted and connected to the original plug
Currently I'm polishing up the mugens and they are coming up very nice. Its hard work but the quality restoration I had done on them before I sold them with the car shows its worth. 3 years of daily driving and they are remarkably clean. Pictures will follow.
I also get a long service award at work this month, so Meister R's are soon to be on their way.
Not a thrilling update, but the plan to make the car better and cleaner than when I owned before is going well, and with some luck and thought, so far its been quite cheap.
Cheers,
Stu
