My track day Civic 1.6i 16v

Post by Kai Vaksdal »

Hey EGJeff

Thanks for reply. Does the Rover GTi have different head / cams / springs etc?
Maybe with some porting and flowing, mine could be allowed up to 8k?

Also, does anyone have any rolling road print outs so that I can see where the power peaks on the 1.6i 16v and the v-tec engines?
It would be interesting to see and compare.

Kai, IIRC the power starts to tail off at around 7100rpm....I'm currently in the process of porting a spare head and inlet, this combined with a 40/45thou skim, exhaust & manifold should get up to the 150/160hp range. The problem with the D16 is it doesnt have a great Rod-stroke ratio, so isnt really built for high revs.

If you need any more info just drop me a PM.

Hi CRX Dave

Been talking to your bro, you both know your Hondas!!

I know what you're saying, but it just feels like the power is so strong as the limiter kicks in - feels like there is more to come... BTW - isn't the bottom end the same as the VT? That revs over 8000 - I figured the same parts would be fine to spin faster.....

Please let me know how the compression raise and porting head works out. If it goes really well, perhaps you'd consider doing another (mine)?

PS - I have CAI, big filter and race manifold/straight through exhaust. Maybe this helps the breathing and power delivery?

Bottom end is different to the VT....The manifold and exhaust are probably why you car feels like it pulls well, is it a 4-2-1 or 4-1 style manifold? 4-1s are designed for better gains toward the top end, so this might explain things.

Could definately help you out with doing yours if you like....Got a few things to sort before I get it all up and running though.

Hi crxdave,

Thanks again for the feedback. The exhaust is 4-2-1 but has no boxes along it's length at all so is very "free flowing". Add lots of cold air in and that could explain the "non-stop" feeling.

Let me know how things go with the head and I'd be really interested if you get some decent gains from the work!

Cheers

This is a friend of mines 16.16 crx with just a cone filter iirc.
It had less than 110k on the clock.

This is my other halfs standard SiR.
The only mods were 17 degrees advance and Vpower, 42K on the clock.

Hi dida4g,

Thanks for those power graphs - very impressive and smooth power for the 1.6i 16v -that's just what mine feels like and the limiter kicks in just as it really seems to get going.....
I will have to get a power graph for mine to find out more.

Is that second car a V-tec? ie, I was looking for the change-over point at 6,000, but it seems so smooth...

Does the 17 degrees timing advance trick work on the D16A9 - ie my engine?

Do it at your own risk but i would put it to 17.

The 2nd car is a VTEC SiR.
Another SiR ran on the same day with filter and exhaust and came away with 157hp.
Dyno Dynamics is the only True RR.

I thought 4th was the favoured gear?

power runs in 3rd or 4th

Post by Kai Vaksdal »

I always thought that 4th gear is the "direct" gear - ie the drive is 1:1 and that shows the best "true" figure.
Doing a power run in 3rd might also explain a slightly high output....

PS - Advancing 17 degrees on a D16A9. Is this PROVEN to give more power? Is it dangerous in any way? I am not bothered about fuel consumption (as it's a sunny day / track car) but I can't have it blowing up on me!!
