Nath's B16 GL - Chargespeeed

Post by Nath94 »

Well boys, it's been a fair few months since my last project (b18'd EE9). I'd been on the hunt for a GL without much success and eventually came across this little thing!

Took a while to get her on the trailer with it stuck in gear and no steering wheel but me and BillB managed in the end!

Image

Loads of plans for it but when I got it home the first job was to unpack it!

About half a tonne of spares was fun to unload!

Image

Unpacked finally! Thank god I found a steering wheel in all those spares!

Image

One of the first jobs to be done was to get the wings off as they had been decorated with red paint for some reason! So whipped them off along with the petrol flap for a colour match.

Image

And back from the paint shop!

The match doesn't look perfect but the rest of the car is filthy! Need to paint the door strip black on the wing as I didn't mention it was supposed to be black!

Image

Uprated shocks were a nice surprise when I finally got underneath!

Image

That's about it for now, so keep your eyes peeled for more updates!

Yeah, I've got similar plans for this one but for now I'm sticking to an OEM+ sort if theme, until I can afford to put nice shiny bits on!

KYBs are excellent shocks.

Nath, does your iPhone add an exclamation mark at the end of every sentence or are you just very, very exited?

Well spent the whole of today amd friday working on the GL without much luck. What was supposed to be an easy fix turned into a nightmare! One of the cam cap studs had snapped at the very top where it keeps the plug cover on and it was annoying me so I got it out.
Image

But while putting a replacement in I only went and snapped that one! In a worse place though, right at the end of the bottom thread.
Image
not good :(

Took the cam caps off to be greeted with this.
Image

Running out if ideas to get it out as nothing I had tried worked, mole grips, pliers, etc. a last ditch attempt before stripping the head and drilling it out I masked it up and cut a slot in the top with a small crafts dremel I have. Just enough to stick a flathead in with another for leverage and turn it out. It's fair to say I had to change my pants afterwards.

The culprit.

Turned the key for the first time for her not to fire up :( fuel pump isn't priming. Re-soldered the main relay without prevail again, EML is now off, no code is thrown and the pump still won't prime. Also while checking for a spark I noticed only 2 cylinders were firing, swapped the NGK ht leads for some standards and that cured that. As for the pump I'm now trying to source the problem. Hopefully tomorrow will bring done better luck as I'm dying to start her up!

On a plus I got the exhaust on and stuck the standard GL pee shooter on for now until I can source something else for her.

Hopefully more to come tomorrow!

Well today I managed to test the fuel pump, wired it up to a battery and it fired away thankfully but this now means I have to trace the wiring back to the ECU to check its taking and sending power as it should, so tomorrow will be fun! Sorry it's not a massive update, more to come tomorrow I hope!

Yeah I regret selling it now as it would have been spot on for this. The GL stealth pipe will do its job for now though!

No picture updates but finally got the car started yesterday! Had to jerry rig the main fuel relay so it runs as a constant when the ignition is on..it's looking like the ECU has been shorted out. Will have to try another ecu and a main relay but I'm happy for now that it runs!

I'd get that sorted before you drive it, sound dubious.
