CV joint

Post by DrCunz »

My cv joint has been clicking for a while now indicating that it needed replaced. I replaced the tre's and the clicking has stopped but now there's a clunk coming from that side. I take it that it's totally fooked now? Do I need to rush to replace it or is it still ok for a while?

Well, IMO, there is no sence to driving around with a foobared running gear. I would get it replaced.

Can I do it myself without a vice and in an underground garage? Is it that easy? Money is a factor this month so can't ask garage

I was lucky when my joint went, happened on my drive when i was pulling out.

It's quiet easy to get the drive shaft out, was a pain for me to get the CV joint off though. So i just popped a good second hand shaft in :)
Much easier.

Have been hearing that's a choice of some. I have limited resources so easiest is best for me. How do you know a shaft is good?

You can visually check a joint by making sure all the boots are fresh and have no cracks or splits. What causes a joint to fail is he boot splitting and water getting in and rusting the joint and the grease getting out so lack of lube. But apart from that its a bit of a gamble. You just have to take the previous owners word.

Its easy enough to change the CV joint, you wouldnt have to have a vice but would make it ALOT easier.

You have to get the clip of the driveshaft to get the CV joint off thats what would be difficult without a vice, but they do come off if you turn the CV joint further than it could go normally in the car and whack with a mallet from behind.

Cheers Ethan, I've heard horror stories about how hard they can be to get off. And I've no workshop or garage just a parking space

Yeah they can be b**** to get off but i found out they do pop off if you turn them too much as mine fell apart when i took my engine out first time around TRE's seized and ball joints seized  only way i could get it out was to rag it around came off after a little while so with a mallet shouldnt be a problem

I know i remember when you made a thread and it was in a parking place while you did the work i thought youd just done in a tesco car park at first or something

Had one collapse on me, real pain!! A few belts with a hammer and it should pop off, can be a bitch getting them back on though, push the shaft into the cv and make sure the clip compresses inside the splines then push it in fully and make sure the circlip clicks into place, first one i ever done it hadnt, didnt get far
If its not broken fook about with it till it is or ya make it better!
