Well said, I know it sounds harsh but these days you get what you pay for.

All is not lost though, plenty of helpful heads on this forum, I am sure we could rekindle that dying flame.

Haha this is true. My last two cars cost 150 and 350 respectively and had no problems so they put me into a false sense of security.

My friends dad always works on all my cars so he is going to have a look later and see what is up with it. I just took it round the block, and it had an odd smell and the tappets were noisy.

I'll update with any findings later.

Just went 4 miles, and the water tank was bubbling and temp was going up. Can't just be a gauge!

You got a bit of a bargain matey, i sold my hatch with no MOT or Tax and a hole in the 2 sills big enough for my head for more than you bought yours for ;)

Dont let this put you of, you look after that d14a1 engine and regulary check for rust and get on top of it quickly, then that wee car could go forever

Dont sell it bud, you'd regret it as soon as it goes.

Also have someone check that it actually has enough water in the rad etc as it could be something daft like that or the thermostat.
Either way easy to fix or have fixed by someone in the know and more importantly cheap :)

Once you get it running right it will last for ever like oldskools, my old d14 did 144000 miles and when i bought it it hadnt been serviced in 3 years

Ripspeed air filter yo! Clearly the last owner had no idea about anything!

One of the big things I am worried about, is I found out its a German import from someone who was in the British Forces over there. Would I have to declare this on the insurance? Someone told me I don't have to as it was bought as a UK spec, but I don't know! As a 19 year old I cant be dealing with insurance complications! Oh and I also can't modify the car which really wasn't the plan. I actually want to fix the problem with it or at the very least source the problem then sell it on as I already have a working car I could use (My Rover, which is a trusted and reliable daily).

Eagle-eye Si comes to the rescue

The passenger-side radiator mount is the correct GL one, but turned upside-down and relocated to help mount the 16i-16 radiator... Get rid of the dodgy airfilter and drop in a K&N panel filter instead.
TBH...doesn't look too bad. Just needs tarting up a bit. Let us know how you get with diagnosing your problems....I still think it might be your thermostat that's causing the grief. Oh...and I am with Si (Cryz2) with regard to it being a UK spec car. No need to inform the insurance of anything untoward.
