Engine Swap Alert
Engine Swap Alert
Following on from my recent "Story time" post it seems our Local Police are now under orders to Pull over any HONDA for Engine inspection.
Several people have been pulled over and they know what to look for, I fully expect to be pulled over pretty soon.
The..."Oh I didn't know" will not work.

Just Hondas or any type of 'modified car'?
As long as its declared on the V5C I'm guessing its still all ok, just undeclared engine upgrades?
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the police, I just don't understand why they waste time with something like this - theres much more serious social problems for them to tackle!

if its on the V5 and you have insured it, there should be any problem. its more to do with insurance issuesRich4thGen wrote:Just Hondas or any type of 'modified car'?

cheers for the heads-up Kev
Hum...concerning.
At the same time, I would not like driving a car on the road with a swapped engine not declared on your V5 or to your insurance.
A friend got involved in an accident with a Prelude and they got him in trouble for his wheels, lights and intake not being declared.
(they did not noticed the Accord Euro R H22...)
Engine change is possible and can be declared to the DVLA.

I used to not care but grow increasingly worried...
I am putting my cars to stock spec at the moment and plan to declare the mods to my insurance soon. Hoping to not have an accident before it is completed.
I think the law slightly changed for engine swaps as you need proof of the origin and proof the conversion was done professionally.
Insurance wise, I need to check but my mate told me he was glad he did it on his S14 and the premuim to declare mods was not that high.
If you get caught in an accident, I bet the insurance would do their best to blame your mods to not pay the victim.
I do not want to end up paying all my life if I injure someone, especially as insurance is expensive enough and I pay my insurance.
Better safe than sorry...

As far as I'm aware it's Just Honda's around here, they've caught wind of this with thanks to Street racers and bogus Insurance claims.Rich4thGen wrote:Just Hondas or any type of 'modified car'?

I'm not a Police Hater either, they've done me no wrong and I'm always polite when I've been pulled.
It's about making money, government money will get reduced like every other public service.

Exactly, call the Police up because someone vandalized your house, stole something, etc. and they don't really care, they never seem to pay any attention to more important issues yet they always have time to waste on pointless issues.Rich4thGen wrote:Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the police, I just don't understand why they waste time with something like this - theres much more serious social problems for them to tackle!
They should be out trying to catch the real criminals.

My cars going on the road in late march when im 18 as a 1.6. Insurance is the same as a VT if its declared and only £800 less if it isnt. Isnt worth the risk no more.
Was planning on bringing it out earlier this year as a 1.3 on the papers when i first bought it but i cant be assed with the fact its going to be too 'hot'.
Im sure you can appeal for it if you do get bummed over tho. In the law it states you are covered 3rd party by a insurance company no matter what the circumstances and they can recover the costs from you. So if you use that in court, you are esentially covered and insured.
As i work in a police compound in the west mids, i see all the smashed up shiz, and all the no insurance stuff come in, I was shocked when i first started at just what kind of cars were un-insured, it ranges all the way up to 58 reg'd top of the range bimma's etc...
Ive not seen anything pulled in for engine swaps yet, but i shall look out for it... I will keep this updated if i see anything like this, as ive only heard of these kinda checks in N.I

Yea Biznitches
Hmm, it's difficult.
As far as insurance is concerned, I have always declared swaps and anyone who doesn't is a twat. No excuse if you are just starting to now either, you should always have declared them.
Declaring to the DVLA though, I do my own swaps, I'm more than capable and I don't always have a receipt for the engine. I will make sure I do in future, but that doesn't help me much. I don't see why I should pay for an inspection either. They are making it even more difficult to declare an engine swap correctly - my sedan is going to be getting a new engine fairly soon, so by rights I should get it changed now, for the current engine, and then again when I have the new one in.
Bear in mind that the DVLA regs apply to a new engine of the same type too, not just capacity changes, so if you have put a new D16 in for example, that is covered too.

No mate. The engine only has to be declared to the DVLA due to the engine number.Tahir wrote:I was joking Momin.
Also, if you would do an engine swap, does it come under the same category as a modification? If so, do you have to declare mods to the DVLA too?
