Yes always worth doing a HPi check.

Vtec - let it warm up, when warm drive - you will notice a slight pull at 5600 revs - it should rev to 8200.
If it hits the limiter at 7k rpm, vtec is not working.
but it must be quite warm, atleast 10 mins of slow driving/idling.
